On August 5, 1982 Richard Harold (“Dick”) Smith left Hurst, Texas in a modified Bell Jetranger III helicopter on an eastward round-the-world flight. Flying solo, he completed the first leg from Hurst to London on August 19, which included the first solo helicopter flight across the Atlantic Ocean.
