Mr. & Mrs. Smoots lived above her family business: they had a separate entrance up the stairs to the side of the building. This allowed them easy access to the kitchen first thing in the morning—because by 11 am. their welcoming dining room would be clock-full of customers ready to eat. After a lull from about 2 to 5 pm. another onslaught of hungry diners showed up and kept coming until the “closed” sign went on the door about 8:30 pm. What brought all these enthusiastic eaters to sit at the smoots tables with their red-and-white checked clothes and their blue-and-white china? Mrs. Smoots chicken and dumplings…her her homemade stews and soups…her fresh-baked pumpkin pies and apple tarts! Who was the best cook in town? Well, Mrs. Wilson at the Wooden Nickle was known for plain yet wholesome fare, so most folks would consider it a contest between Mrs. Smoots of the Old Homestead and Mrs. Applegate of the Boarding House.
